"Arūnė Tornau was born in 1956. in Vilnius. 1979 graduated from the Vilnius Art Institute in architecture, so from the very beginning she was too different - coming from architecture, a woman dreaming of entering the highest caste - to be a painter. In Soviet times, painting (and sculpture, as you know) considered the highest branch of art, was merciless to those who did not have a diploma in this type of art, merciless to women as well. Thank God, the history of art is full of artists who have withstood such pressure.
The artist's work can be divided into two parts - painting and objects. But all of them tirelessly reflect the silent processes of entropy. Metal-eating rust, natural structures, vegetation disappearing in autumn establish themselves in the artist's imagery, and under the layer of paint hide old materials, often also time-worn tablecloths, curtains, sheets and other fabrics, patiently playing the role of painting canvas. often determining the painting itself with its textures, in some places emerging from it or showing seams."
